Varadero is the largest resorts complex in the Caribbean, national tourists started to coming here in 1872, but the international development didn't begin until 1930's when the US chemical millionaire Irenee Dupont Nemours built a large estate on the peninsula. Even Mafia boss Al Capone used to holiday in Varadero. Nowadays most tourists come from Canada and Europe. The peninsula has over 20 km of white sandy beaches, and is like heaven for sun worshipping people.
